The Mighty Melodians

Of the myriad vocal groups to make their mark on the Jamaican music scene during the 1960s and 1970s, few were more popular and successful than the Melodians.

Formed in the mid-60s, the trio of Brent Dowe, Tony Brevett and Trevor McNaughton enjoyed significant success with almost every Kingston-based producer of note prior to their breakup around 1977.

Among the most significant  triumphs were the sublime ‘Sweet Sensation’, one of the first Trojan singles top breach the national pop charts, and their definitive version of ‘Rivers Of Babylon’, which preceded the rise of roots reggae by a number of years.

To mark the birth of founding member, Brent Dowe on 29th of June 1946, the group are this week’s Trojan Artist of the Month, with newly updated bio and Spotify playlist  posted in the Artists section of this site.
