From 22nd May, respected DJ, musician, film-maker, presenter and Trojan fan, Don Letts is taking over the This Is Trojan spotify playlist.
Don’s reputation has long since been firmly established in both the film and music world through a substantial body of work from the late Seventies up to the present day. He initially came to notoriety as the DJ that single-handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae at the first punk club, the Roxy.
Adopting the punk D.I.Y. ethic, Don made his first documentary ‘The Punk Rock Movie’ in 1978, since which time he has directed hundreds of videos, for acts as diverse as Bob Marley and the Clash. In the Eighties, he formed the group Big Audio Dynamite with Mick Jones (ex-Clash), releasing four critically acclaimed albums and the hit single. ‘E=Mc2‘.
All the while, the music of his youth remained his first love, with Trojan’s ‘Tighten Up’ series leaving such a big impression that, twenty years after the release of Volume One, he, along with his fellow Big Audio Dynamite band mambers named one of their albums in its honour: ‘Tighten Up Vol. 88’!
Reflecting his deep affection for the label, Don will be adding many of his all-time ska and reggae favourites from the catalogue to the playlist over the coming weeks, ensuring a fascinating and hugely enjoyable listen, perfect for the onset of summer.
