Greyhound & The Rudies

On 26th June 1971, UK-based reggae group, Greyhound breached the British pop charts with an uplifting reggae version of ‘Black And White’, with the recording promptly climbing to number six on the listings.

Further UK hits swiftly followed, with their version of ‘Moon River’ peaking at number 12 early in 1972, and ‘I Am What I Am’ following just two months later.

But these ‘newcomers’ to the mainstream charts were, in fact, for the most part, seasoned hitmakers, having previously backed Tony Tribe on his popular 1969 version of ‘Red Red Wine’ and Freddie Notes (the group’s original leader singer) on a stirring version of ‘Montego Bay’, which made it into the charts late in 1970.

Their fascinating story is related in an updated bio on their career, which along with an expanded 30 track spotify playlist highlighting their most popular recordings, can be found within the Artists section on this site
